Cara graduated from University of Central Missouri (go Mules) in 2004 with a double major in Accounting and Business Administration. From 2001 to 2005, she worked for a small public firm in Warrensburg, Missouri preparing tax returns, compiling financial statements and processing payroll. In efforts to expand her experience and knowledge, she explored the corporate arena, ultimately landing a Staff Accountant role with Danisco (food ingredient manufacturer), located in New Century, Kansas, in 2005. It was in this year that Cara moved with her children to Gardner, Kansas, a town that feels more like home to me now than her actual hometown. She moved through the ranks of Danisco and was a leader of the North American Scanning Solution for Accounts Payable in SAP. In 2009, she went to work with CareFusion (medical devices), located in Leawood, Kansas, in a newly created role that managed the transactional accounting functions. It was here that Cara worked extensively with internal and external auditors, streamlined procedures and implemented processes to comply with SOX guidelines. In 2013, she was promoted to Financial Analyst with the expectation that she would work in the Chicago area.
After much consideration, Cara and her children chose to stay in Gardner to pursue a dream that she had since graduation: her own practice. In 2013, Nexus Accounting was founded and opened with three accounting clients and 30 tax clients. Since inception, the business has experienced remarkable organic growth through involvement in the Gardner Edgerton Chamber of Commerce, Elevate Edgerton! and referrals from current clients. In just 5 short years, Nexus Accounting now serves over 50 accounting/business clients and 300+ individual tax clients. Cara works hard as a champion for small businesses, particularly female-owned businesses. She treats her clients like family, often going above and beyond the traditional accountant/preparer role, to make sure her clients have the necessary resources and tools to effectively manage and operate their small businesses and quickly resolve tax issues.
Cara has two children Peyton (20) and Lexi (16), and one boyfriend Matt; all of whom offer unending support and encouragement. During the early evenings, you’ll likely find her lifting heavy weights in the gym (and competing in powerlifting meets as training time allows). She has given her time every Wednesday delivering Meals on Wheels to Gardner residents since 2014, taking time to deliver a meal, a smile and (sometimes lengthy) conversation with home-bound seniors. She will gladly recount many anecdotes with the various friends she’s made over the years if you ask. Travel has recently become a major priority; the destination doesn’t much matter but Colorado seems to be the location of choice with mountains, fresh air and the bluest skies.
Connie is new to Nexus Accounting as of 2018 but she brings 30+ years of individual income tax preparation experience and wisdom. Her niche is military and clergy tax situations, with specialized knowledge of Missouri state returns. She trained Cara in tax preparation over 15 years ago. Due to remarkable growth during the 2018 filing season, Connie is a welcomed addition to the team. She will mostly work behind the scenes, but don’t hesitate to ask her a question or ask some advice regarding tax matters if you catch her in the office.
Connie moved to Gardner late in 2017 from Missouri, where she had lived her entire life, with her husband Bob. They are very devoted grandparents to their four grandchildren; moving to this area to spend more time with children and grandchildren. Connie loves to cook family meals and entertain as often as family is willing to visit. In case you’re wondering, her fried chicken is the best ever.
Connie volunteers frequently with her husband in his role as President of Artful Askers, an organization which exists to empower faith-based and community organizations with various resources to meet needs in their community. They often work, together as a team at speaking engagements and workshops and Connie volunteers her time alongside her husband at Project Connect events throughout the midwest. Connie also volunteers each month at the Gardner Church of the Nazarene, assisting with the Harvesters’ Food Program, distributing free perishable food to Gardner residents who are in need.
Lainey is brand new to the Nexus Accounting team as of 2018 and the workforce. Lainey is currently a junior at Gardner-Edgerton High School, where she is on the Principal’s Honor Roll. She was hand-picked for the Administrative Assistant role, as she pays close attention to detail and is eager to learn how to run/manage a small business. Lainey is currently loving her psychology class and is intrigued by the workings of the brain; she is considering pursuing a career in this field, possibly criminal psychology. She is an independent self-starter and problem-solver (even when there’s no problem to solve).
Lainey was born and raised in Gardner and lives with her parents and younger brother. Lainey has been active in volleyball and cheerleading, choosing to focus on academics in her high school career. Lainey enjoys spending time with her family and close group of friends: hanging out, taking pictures and watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S. She loves to travel throughout the US with her family and she seized an amazing opportunity to visit Europe with other peers during the summer of 2018, where she explored the sights of Paris, France and Barcelona, Spain among others. She is a numbers gal and has always excelled in math courses. The radio volume in the car always has to be set to an increment of 5 and she likes weird socks.
